Vargas Family Statement on the Release of Jorge Marcelo Vargas & the Other Americans
First and foremost, we want to thank God above all for answering our prayers and delivering our family from this unimaginable ordeal. Our hearts are full today with love and gratitude now that this nightmare is finally over.
We are deeply thankful to President Donald Trump, Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler, and Special Envoy Ric Grenell for securing the release of our dad and grandfather, Jorge Marcelo Vargas, and the other Americans.
We extend our deep appreciation to President Bukele of El Salvador for his role in my father's release.
These past **10 months—305 days—**have been a nightmare for our entire family. The experience was incredibly isolating and lonely at times. For all that time, we had no communication with our dad—we didn’t know how he was doing. We constantly worried about his health, his safety, and how he was being treated. We cried, and we prayed for his safe return. And now, that day is finally here.
We are so grateful to everyone who stood by our family during this extraordinary time, especially those within the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs and the National Security Council. We deeply appreciate the advocacy of the 18 Senators who showed moral courage in fighting for our dad’s release, as well as the release of the other Americans. The support from Senator Kaine, Senator Warner, and their dedicated staff meant so much to our family. And a special thank you to the members of Bring Our Families Home, the Foley Foundation and Hostage US.
We kindly ask for continued privacy as we reunite and begin the healing process after this long ordeal.
Thank you, and may God bless you all.
Additional thanks
We are incredibly grateful to Jacob Hernandez from the SPEHA Team for his unwavering support and advocacy throughout this difficult journey.
Jacob, your dedication, compassion, and persistence played a vital role in helping bring my father home. We will never forget your kindness and the countless efforts you made behind the scenes. Thank you for standing with our family and with all the families seeking justice and freedom for their loved ones.
Listen to Jorge’s granddaughter speak about the impact of his absence.
The Bring Our Families Home (BOFH) campaign unveiled a new mural in Georgetown on April 30, 2025 between 3131 and 3125 M Street, Washington, DC. The mural depicts the faces of hostages and wrongfully detained US citizens. Freedom begins with a name. His name is Jorge Marcelo. Listen to his granddaughter speak about her father, at the dedication of the mural. She and her mother worked with the artist, Isaac Campbell, to install Jorge Marcelo’s head shot. The purpose of the mural is to raise awareness and garner support for the return home of our fellow citizens.
